Current Events : U.S Capitol Protests

Hey everyone! Wishing you all a happy new year’s and a big welcome back, I can’t wait to see what this semester has in store for us and with that let’s get right into this month’s current events piece.

As of right now, Joe Biden is now our new president and will be for the next 4 years, but before he got his inauguration, a lot of people did not seem happy with it, especially supporters of Donald Trump. The protesters didn’t just yell outside of the capital but actually stormed it and went inside. Many of them made a mess, littered, and disrupted the capital. This disaster made huge headlines throughout the country’s news. Many people did not agree considering that the behavior of the protestors was extremely immature and inappropriate. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser of Washington issued an order on Wednesday night extending the city’s public emergency for 15 days stating that some extreme protestors may continue to wreak havoc in the nation’s capital.

This order gave officials the power to reduce business hours, order people off the street if a curfew is issued, and expend funds as needed to protect public safety. The directive, which will expire at 3 p.m. on Jan. 21, extends the emergency through the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20. It came some hours after Bowser imposed a citywide curfew from 6 p.m. on Wednesday until 6 a.m. on Thursday. In a statement explaining further about the extension, Bowser called out the Trump supporter protesters who came to the city “for the purpose of engaging in violence and destruction and have engaged in violence and destruction.”

Many people were not happy with these protests, mainly because it was all because they didn't agree with their new president, overall it was a huge mess and hopefully, D.C gets better.
