Sneak Peak: Untitled Book: Pt.4

Part two of A. E. Charles's Untitled Book!

“Listen, David. I know you want this promotion and out of everyone here, you are the most deserving, but I can’t give it to you if you don’t do the paperwork correctly. You have to do the paperwork the right way. I cannot stress this enough. Do you understand, David?” She asked him with pleading eyes. “Yes ma’am, I understand. I will fix any past paperwork and make sure to complete future paperwork correctly.” He responded in an almost sarcastic tone that did not match the natural country twang of his voice. She sighed and looked down at her desk for a few seconds before looking up at the man again. “Thank you, David. Now, the day is done, so you are free to go. Have a good night. Please close the door on your way out.” She said politely. He nodded at her and turned and walked out the office door, closing it after him. She sighed again and let her head fall into her hands, rubbing her eyes. She sat in the same position for a couple of minutes before slowly moving to lean back in her chair. As she did her mind wandered and landed on the man that was in her office only minutes ago. David. David was almost a handsome man if it wasn’t for his bad attitude. He had curly blonde hair and peach skin. She didn’t know where exactly he was from, but she knew it was somewhere in the country, which was evident from his accent. He was short, only standing at 5 feet and 7 inches. He was probably somewhere between 29 and 32. He also had freckles peppering his entire face and a scar that started from just under his left eye, over the bridge of his nose, and stopping at the end of the right side of his nose. She didn’t know how he had gotten the scar, but she assumed it was a painful story, as he never mentioned it and no one in the office knew. Besides the scar, he had a boyish look, but he was no boy. David was one of the rudest people she had ever met. He wasn’t outwardly rude, but he made snide comments and disrespected you to your face in the subtlest of ways. And although she hated the thought of giving him the promotion, he was the only person in the office that had the talent or guts to do the job. She didn’t like him, but she had to admit he was great at his job. Besides the fact that he never did the paperwork correctly.

She continued to think about David but was abruptly pulled out of her mind by a loud crashing noise coming from somewhere outside of her office. She looked at the door and wondered what exactly could’ve happened. There was no way someone was still here. Her floor was full of people who only worked here because it paid well. Three more crashes came from beyond her office door and she stood up from her chair, sure the crashes were getting louder. She then realized it must be someone bumping into the pillars with vases on them that lined the hallway leading to her office. At this realization, she walked over to the closet in her room and grabbed the bat she kept in case of emergencies. She viewed this as an emergency. She slowly walked to the door and was about to grab the handle when it started to turn, indicating someone was trying to make their way in. She sprinted behind the door before it started to open and waited as the door swung open and someone fell onto the floor of her office. ‘They must have been leaning on the door and weren’t able to move quickly enough to move off of the door before it opened.’ She thought. She waited for a few moments behind the door, waiting for the person to get up and continue whatever it was they were doing. But the person on the floor didn’t. They stayed on the ground and didn’t move. She moved from behind the door and readied her bat, in case she had to use it. But when she laid eyes on the person on the floor, her heart dropped. She knew him. She would always know him. It was the man from the mirror.

The bat fell on the floor and she dropped onto her knees, grabbing him and rolling him over. Tears welled in her eyes as she stared at the man she had been yearning for as long as she could remember. “Maks?” She questioned. His eyes opened briefly and he caught her eyes. “My love” was all he said before his eyes closed again and he lost consciousness, leaving her sitting next to his unconscious body.
